Right -- you will not feel! The mechanization of men into "killing machines," as Joker says in the narration. Similar theme to "A Clockwork Orange" in which Alex is robotized, robbed by the state of his own nature; or "Barry Lyndon" in which Barry fails to subvert his own urges in favor of the customs of aristocratic society and is destroyed for it; or "2001" in which the evolution is from bellowing ape to dryly articulate computer; or "The Shining," where Jack reverts to bellowing ape... etc.!
In the movie it only happens once -- to Pyle -- and Sgt. Hartman is unaware of it, asleep in another room. If he did know about it I bet he'd be OK with it, since it does get Pyle to finally shape up and Hartman is a sadist himself anyway.
I think the only enemy they directly engage is the sniper at the end, who turns out to be a young girl who begs Joker, "Kill me, kill me" before he takes her out rather than let her lie there and suffer (his moment of redemption, or as close as you get in a world of shit). Is there any contact with the enemy other than the firefight with this sniper?
