August 1993 and it's 25 years since the end of mainline steam. The East Lancs. celebrated with a month long gala with numerous visiting engines. There was plenty, of shall we say, spirited running throughout the month. This short video, originally filmed on Super VHS tape, shows some of the highlights. The locomotives seen in order of appearance are;
GWR 2-8-0 no. 2857
London Transport ex GWR Pannier Tank L99 (I think!)
GWR 2-8-0 no. 3822
GWR Hall class no.6998 'Burton Agnes Hall'
SR Pacific no.35005 - Canadian Pacific
SR Urie S15 4-6-0 no.30506
LMS class 8F 2-8-0 no.48431
LMS Ivatt class 2 no.46441
BR Standard 4 no.76079 solo and with 5407 and 92203 'Black Prince'
LMS class 5 4-6-0 no. 5407
LMS Jubilee class 4-6-0 no. 45596 'Bahamas', solo and double heading with no. 5593 'Kolhapur'
Recreating the last Copy Pit banker with class 40 D335 is LMS class 8F 2-8-0 no. 48431 running as departed classmate 48278

  • Eeee Lad! No caravans at Burrs? -and I had to wait 'till 't end for a HV jacket.

Just not good enough- must try harder!

(How times have changed Eh, Austin?)

  • Changed indeed and not always for the better. I have heard talk that the caravan site is to be extended too!

  • Brilliant video, great to see drivers having it! I think we need a video compliation of the best "Enthusiastic driving on the preserved scene". Although I think most of it will be from the 80's and 90's. They just dont drive like this anymore!!

  • Funnily enough someone commented on my recent video from the SVR Gala that a lot of the spark seems to have gone from performances. There was a reply from someone who had a friend who was a driver who suggested they are told to drive more conservatively to save fuel these days. Glad you enjoyed this little taste of how it was anyway.

  • Corking video sir, particularly with many sequences featuring, what may be termed, 'vigorous' driving! I'd love to be able to see my west Somerset Railway turn on something similar in the next few years!

  • Thanks very much, I have to say having just returned from the WSR that their crews can put on a bit of a show

  • Merci Philippe pour vos aimables commentaires. Bon à regarder en arrière, parfois

  • Thanks, yes if I remember rightly that stock arrived not long before the gala. I think 35005 appeared in blue at the Lancs too

  • Thanks very much, the last scene is rather sad but as we know it wasn't really the end. We are so lucky that so much survives
