I really don't like this aria in German, English, or French even if the singing is great, as it is here. At the same time, I always love to hear Hempel's voice, so beautiful in tone and diction, dazzling in technique, and artistic in phrasing. Still, I prefer Galli-Curci's and Tetrazzini's recordings of the aria.
There is not only the exquisite beauty of the voice, the trills and shakes, the choice of ornaments, but also a sweetly elegiac mood—even in spite of the fast tempo prompted by time limits—a perfect sense of what this romance is about. What a lovely disk. Thanks.
This is the best I've heard her sing. Thanks for the post.
