It's 3 by 4 because the redstone on the orange part turns it into a BUD switch. Just because it's an output doesn't mean it's not a piece of the circuit.

@megadudeley I only counted the necessary parts that the latch needs to work, i did the same with both.

This is not a glitch as the repeater is powering the block and that block is powering the piston, it is simular to powering a block with a repeater and then putting redstone wiring on the other side.
