Scum

A classic scene from the excellent film Scum, set in a British young offenders institute (or Borstel). On release, it was subject of much scrutiny for its violent, shocking imagery and daring depiction of state run institutions.

amused by many scummy comments here ...! was not in borstal but was a black mixed race kiddie in an institution for the wayward early 70s england ... same deal though - totally corrupt institution - racist and brutal - hard cases - but mostly pathetic poor little bleeders - rape of little kids by the big kids but also the 'teachers' did the bizz then... Archer and Carling beat the system and some of us survived in reality too - this bbc play is so true - all about taking no shit - RESIST!

Carlin is a tragic character because he had little choice but to become the Daddy because he was victimised by the Borstal's current Daddy and his gang so it was either he took them down or he was to be the victim for the rest of his time inside.
