On March 10th 1959, thousands of Tibetans took to the streets and surrounded Norbulingka Palace, the summer residence of the Dalai Lama, to protect their leader and demand that the Chinese troops leave Tibet. Although government leaders ordered the crowd to disperse, the people intensified their protest. In turn the Chinese responded with fatal force bringing about a full scale uprising in the streets of the capital, Lhasa.
