  • @sethmanrockandroll I think a lot of people didn't like "Rocky" V because they weren't ready to see the tragic fall of a hero. (Namely Tommy Gunn.) Going back to Part 1, even Rocky had some outbursts and issues.

I see Tommy as a nice guy who had some faults. And he became corrupted through temptations that were hard to resist. How many people could give $20,000. and a nice new car back?

Also Rocky was offered a chance at the title. It didn't seem to come for Tommy without GW Duke.

  • @eternalhalloween1

Tommy was also real interesting because of that dark streak he had inside of him, the rough streak that would emerge every now and then even before Duke got him. He's an interesting and complex character, most people just don't really give him the time though.

  • @sethmanrockandroll III was alright. I just feel Mr. T was too obnoxious. In 2, Apollo did some not so nice things, but we could see he had understandable frustrations. (The hate mail, a letter suggesting he kill himself, etc.)

I did like how Apollo helped Rocky in 3.

The character of Lang was just too exaggerated for me, and he had no redeeming qualities.

Tommy was a decent guy, and I liked how we could feel sad as he fell under GW Duke's seduction.

It actually had a better underdog theme than Rocky III, as far as I see things. In Rocky III he has to try and get back to the streets and relearn the Eye Of the Tiger, but he still had his wealth to fall back on regardless of what happened. In Rocky V he actually was broke. I just didn't feel like there was much on the line between him and Clubber Lang either. I liked all the other ones better, Rocky III was mostly good for the footage clips, but thats me.

  • @sethmanrockandroll Yea. I also like how GW Duke was SO bad. But he was also SO hilarious. V got away from the underdog theme and took an interesting turn. (It dealt with deception. Something mentioned in 1, but never really explored.)

I also liked how V showed that people loved Rocky even outside of the ring.

And I liked how we were upset by TG's seduction by GW Duke.

In fact, I can't help but feel "Rocky" V influenced "Star Wars" 'Revenge of the Sith.'

  • @eternalhalloween1

Exactly. By the way, I enjoyed Rocky V also, unfortunately it takes Balboa out of the ring but it has a lot of interesting stuff like the after effects of fighting Drago, Rocky having to go back to the streets because he loses his fortune, the family problems, and then at the end we see Rocky standing up to Gunn while knowing that any of the strikes could potentially kill him... thats great stuff.

  • @sethmanrockandroll I didn't much like 1. (Too slow) I thought 2 was a lot better. I liked how Superman had to fight 3 beings with his powers. And also that Lex had the courage to deal with them. And of course the look at Superman's character.

3 was my favorite. Richard Pryor was HILARIOUS. And also there were some dark serious moments like where Superman had to fight himself.

I feel SM 4 (like "ROCKY" V) was unfairly maligned. 4 was what 1 should have been.

The problem with these hollywood guys is that they just don't know how to wing it. If you listen to a lot of the filmmakers working on these superman movies, you'll hear them go on and worrying about Marlon Brando footage and different directors, yatta yatta. THIS movie doesn't have any Brando in it, it has NUCLEAR MAN (or I use to call him Sun Man) and its my favorite! And then the Second one is right behind it, Kneel Before Zod!

  • I know even Christopher Reeve said in his book "Still Me" that "Superman" 4 was a disaster.

But in all honesty, I didn't think it was so bad. I kind of liked it. I thought it dealt with some relevant issues of the time. Whether it was Superman's right to intervene, etc.

It also underlines how some people profit from keeping the fear of the destruction of the earth alive. Also the fight between Superman and Nuclearman was well done.

I really don't think this was a bad film.

  • we all know why they said no to another superman sequel after this one: cause it sucked ass.
