THE last of La Salles brother principals in Malaysia, Dato' Brother Paul Ho, was given a grand send-off by staff and students of the St Xaviers Institution (SXI) in Farquhar Street in Penang yesterday.

Even though no tears were shed, there was a tinge of sadness in the air as he toured the school grounds for the final time while accompanied by the school band.

Brother Paul never had a minute to himself as he was constantly approached by teachers and students for photos.

Farewell to beloved principal: Brother Paul sitting on asedan chair during the send-off.

Even though it was his retirement celebration, he was still giving last-minute advice to the students.

I feel like a celebrity! he said.

When asked if there was anything he had failed to implement during his tenure in the school, he said: I havent had the chance to repaint the school!

Brother Paul said he was sad to leave but now he could finally get some rest after serving 15 years and nine months at the school.

Sweet treat: Brother Paul admiring his birthday cake.

I will tour Europe and then the United States for six months starting July and will decide what to do next. I will most probably be moving to Australia next to be with my family, he said.

He also expressed his hope that the schools rich traditions would continue.

Representative for the teachers Cheng Beng Lock gave a touching speech as tribute to Brother Paul.

Its a great honour to have Brother Paul helm the schools administration and more importantly to spearhead the schools mission and vision, he said.

The schools vision of touching hearts and changing lives has truly been an inspiration.

Armed with his infectious smile and gentle demeanour, Brother Paul would stop at nothing to get donations for the running of the bakery which he set up.

He also assured Brother Paul that the teaching and non-teaching staff of the school would do their best to maintain his legacy for the betterment of Xavierians.

Brother Paul was the first local to serve as principal in the schools 157-year history. He later released 157 heart-shaped balloons to symbolise the schools success for all the years and planted a tree.

He was then carried out of the school building in a sedan chair.

There will be no more white cassocked figures roaming the school looking for mischievous students to discipline after the retirement of Brother Paul.
