This video is instructional on how to make quill pens. You'll see step by step: how to convert a feather into an iconic drawing tool.
There's also info on actually drawing with a quill and using inks of different colors.

  • What is the temp of the sand?

  • @bishopdarq The sand is about 200 degrees F or perhaps a bit more. Warm the sand slowly on low heat and mix it with a utensil so the heat distribution is even. When the you cannot place your finger tips on the sand surface for more than 3 or 4 seconds then turn the heat on very low and submerge feathers.

    Good luck.

  • Thank you.

  • To avoid uncontrolled discharge of ink one can hold the paper a bit more at an incline and hold the pen at a more horizontally. Holding the pen at or near vertical can be a problem. In the vid you can see how I hold the pen and paper etc. Thank you!

  • Is it advisable to use any other kinds of feathers? Or would you strongly recommend goose? Thanks for this video, it was the most helpful out of all that I have watched.

  • Other species of bird feathers can be used including turkey (and goose of course). (an artist supply store in New York City named New York Art Central artist supply sells goose feathers.)
