That's exactly how I feel about Mahler's music. Even without his usual refinement process after the first draft of the composition the 10th is still unsurpassed. I think it even has strong roots in his first "Wunderhorn" symphonies.
What a tragedy that also Sinopoli passed away that early. His Adagio of the 10th is a very slow reading: he scanned the score down to its bones, but with the skills and verity of a real poet. Sound contradictive? He made and managed it. GRAND.
This sucks, there is no sound!!!

Absolutely love this piece, perhaps Mahler's second farewell (one cannot deny that the 9th symphony is more of a farewell).
