Evidence that the 25FPS framerate cap throttles the mouse.

To Blizzard: Please remove the 25FPS cap in 1.13!

For whatever reasons, the input mouse display in D2 singleplayer is really choppy and grounds for annoyance.

The excuse I got was that the animations were made to play at 25FPS on a local game... This argument does not work, since the FPS cap is REMOVED in a SINGLE SESSION TCP/IP multiplayer game!

Yes, if I start a multiplayer game and play by myself, the mouse choppiness/lag is removed!

I cannot understand the excuse given to keep the 25FPS cap in singleplayer, when it works fine without it in multiplayer, when all the animation/frame is all processed LOCALLY. If the FPS cap is removed like this, why can't it be removed in actual singleplayer? Here is a test for everyone to try. 1) Run D2 singleplayer 2) Load up a map 3) Move your mouse around, get a feel of it 4) Press esc to bring up menu 5) The mouse should feel infinitely smoother and crisp for most of you. This is what I want in REAL TIME and not just the menu. Note the FPS cap is REMOVED in the menu!

  • I think the mouse is runned in another thread so it does get updated more than 25 times per second. The game just can't draw mouse faster than capped FPS.

I'm also pretty sensitive about my mouse movement and I only noticed that FPS is capped in game, and not in the menu.

Have you tried to increase your mouse poll rate? It worked somehow for me on many games.

  • Yeah, increasing my polling rate to 1000 (Logitech G9) doesn't do anything. I hope Blizzard removes the FPS cap in the next patch. But it's doubtful.

  • The highest res on my current monitor is 1280 by 1024, but I've tried using other monitors as well and the problem persists.

I've also tried changing the mouse and keyboard but still no difference.

At first I thought the problem was with Vista but I've seen a couple of people with XP have the same issue.

What sucks is that only an isolated group of people have this problem so we may never find a fix for this :(

  • I'm pretty sure this problem is persistent in 90% of computers. They just don't notice the problem. I'm very sensitive to mouse movement.

Spread the word, maybe Blizzard will do something.

  • Damn dude I have the exact same problem. I've searched everywhere but I can't find a solution.

I mean what's the actual point of limiting the FPS is signgle player? It's just retarded. i hope somebody finds a way to fix this some day.

  • Well, the cap is apparently there so the animations are in sync. But this argument falls apart, because in a single LAN game (multiplayer by yourself), the FPS cap is removed, and the game is fine.

What monitor size do you have?

  • i have this problem also :( i didnt have this problem at all with my old computer :( i dont know why and also for me its not fun to play this game anymore. i have lag mouse now all the time expect in multiplayer games.

  • I know this is a old video.. But just getting back into d2 for the reset after 8 years,a nd wlel, my vid card took a shit.. so playing on a 13 year old card in my nice pc hahahhaha

But my mouse is choppy, and I'm getting 750-1k fps! I'm trying to figure out how to slow it down to see if it helps!

The game uses 25-30% load on my 3.4ghz quad core!

I remember when I first started playing it ran flawless on a cerelon 600mhz lol

  • if anyonw knows how to fix this please let me know. i have this prob and i cant fix it...

  • paladin for example . FHR (faster hit recovery) if you have 9 FPS its 0% FHR , just recovers depending on what items you wear , but if you have 8 fps = 7% additional FHR , 7fps = 15% 6fps=27% 3fps =200% 2fps =4680% faster hit recovery .. but rofl with 2 fps you cant even play the game but if you lag and get 2fps for 1 second , your hp will be restored instantly all good . fps affects all settings in game e.g walk/run speed , hit speed etc.

  • play it in windows mode.. can't tell if the mouse is being choppy or not.

  • I have no idea what you just said but mouse lag is never a good thing. It makes the game almost unplayable (for me).

  • u knw whats really cool? when your fps is low it means its better for you. Ive read low FPS means more FHR and casting speed . but need to have really low fps like 10 5 2 .Ive read 2 FPS gives palladin 4000%+ FHR(faster hit recovery) thats like invincible??

  • You know what really sucks? When the game first starts, the framerate is fine. then after a few seconds it drops to 25 and stays there.

Also when you use waypoints the mouse will be smooth for a couple of seconds before becoming choppy again.

It's like the game is taunting us or something.

  • You are def. not alone in this! I have played Diablo 2 since the beginning and the choppy mouse has always been my biggest beef! Any computer, any mouse! It does not make any difference! The mouse movement is far from smooth or accurate. I really hope they fix this!
