In an older doco George Martin said that John asked for the orchestral climax but by this video it had become "they" wanted it......??

The day it came out I was about 15 and the local FM station played it uninterrupted start to finish. It was so Epic no commercials were allowed to sully the effect on the listener. My Band mates and I listened intently, transfixed, in Awe. And, as you said, we were changed forever.
I think you could ask most baby boomers where they were when they first heard it and they'd have a similar story to tell
