James Garner stars as a US Naval officer who is chosen to be the martyr at D-Day on June 6, 1944. His superior orders him to be the first casualty of the invasion, while ironically he is actually a coward and does everything he can to stay away from combat. Julie Andrews, James Coburn, Melvyn Douglas and Keenan Wynn round out the supporting cast.
I have watched this film every chance I get ever since it first came out. The screenwriter, Paddy Chafevsky also penned NETWORK. He was a genius with dialogue.

One of my favs as well. It has a killer tempo, a ridiculously well chosen cast and fluid dialogue that never seems to stop, even when nobody is saying anything. If that makes sense.

This is a brilliant film and one of the best-written scripts ever. Julie Andrews proves she can turn in a fine performance without singing a note. She filmed this right after "Mary Poppins" and right before "The Sound of Music." Melvyn Douglas and James Coburn are magnificent in their roles.
