i wish you have a wooden block under that anvil

Borax straight from the box tends to just sit on top of the metal.
If you melt it into a metal dish or tray, and then break it up before fluxing your metal with it, the hot metal just sucks it up into every nook and cranny and makes for a better weld.
Try it and you'll see what I mean.

banging around on anvils and steel can really screw your elbows up over time--or that's what I've heard a blacksmith/knifemaker say

hilarious :D

u wish u had a power hammer? try it with a bigger anvil, a base where the anvil is locked and stone ground for the basement.
this could help u very much. each jumping of the anvil, shout down the power of the hammer pounch.

That gotta be some hard work without a powerhammer. And thats a nice forge you have, did you make it yourself? I just started with damascus my self to. :)

Yeah like people have said before that anvil needs a better mount, like a tree stump. Your hammer shoud bounce off the anvil not with the anvil.
