Now The Sweeney is one cop show that had LOADS of complaints during its 4-year period, mainly from the Mary Whitehouse brigade. I'll bet she and others of her like were up in arms when they saw the violence in eps like Abduction, In From The Cold, Taste Of Fear and Nightmare.

@CI5AgentSweeps You're right there. Special Branch really was a set-up for The Sweeney. Craven and Haggerty weren't averse to using strong-arm tactics and I'm sure there must have been a few complaints, but at the end of the day, they were dealing with a dangerous felon which is why they had to push him like that. Haggerty has been described as an early version of Bodie.

And this was BEFORE The Sweeney, I think these two were the first tough guys on TV that worked for the police. HAggerty really added that action bit to Special Branch :) Wonder if this scene got any complaint, since two policemen are treating a criminal this way.
