Alfred Molina technical demo using the unfinalized NVIDIA RSX graphic chipset of the PlayStation 3.

Spider-Man 2 - a Sony Pictures film - was used to demonstrate the power of the PS3 quite often over the course of the two-hour conference, but here it was used at its subtlest level, with Dr Octopus actor Alfred Molina's face born again on the screen and rendered by the PS3. The shadows were realistic, the light reflected and transmitted through the ears - the way that your ears sometimes glow red as strong light hits them - and the skin was softly lit and subtly detailed, imperfections clearly visible, light bouncing off the eyeballs. It was almost convincing enough to be real.

The closest game which will probably showcase such realistic detailed character will be Heavy Rain being developed by the french Quantic Dream. The game will be out exclusively for PlayStation 3 in 2009.

  • As for Uncharted 2 having maxed out PS3 at 100 %....that's like PR bullshit comments in inteviews. ND always said there is still space for optimisation and that's what they are doing and will be the same for upcoming titles forboth consoles and their own each first party titles.

  • Epic doesn't really count there. they were there at the beginning of the conception of the 360. Gears is a good example of U3 doing its best to 360 and is better suited for 360. It doesn 't mean PS3 can't do the same. Arkham asylum uses also UE3.From Uncharted series to God Of War III and Heavy Rain, GT5 and more upcoming titles for 2012 from first party we ll certainly see more improvment but not more wow factor on the graphic side.

  • Boths excepted the architecture are kinda similar in the results they can give on multiplat titles excepted 360 excelling in better texturing and shadows and PS3 having more saturated colors and lighting both having their own pros and cons. But we were debating about which one had the graphical knowledge and power. The best titles to show that are the first party titles from each consoles.

  • That is right, some developpers already said that developping multiplat games from PS3 to 360 have more benefit than the opposite for both plateforms.

  • GPU only means nothing, by those 6 years of gaming, we haven't seen any 360 exclusive titles having a superior graphical edge on PS3 titles.I haven't seen a wow factor on halo, gears and forza titles. If we talk about brut powerhouse specs PS3 's CELL outruns the xenos but is limited with the RAM, it's not unknown that devs know use CELL+SPus and dedicate them on the graphics, RSX is weak but combined with CELL it can do marvelous things.

  • @TEEDA uncharted 2 used all of the ps3's cpu power, just not the most effeciently, so it is possible to get better visuals out of the system, just using optimisation like you said...

  • @TEEDA Your correct. Even the new Metal Gear Rising shows PS3 as the leading platform.

    For Bayonetta, Platinum developed only the Xbox 360 version. The PS3 version was handled externally. ( Why it looked crap on PS3 )

    However, starting with Vanquish, Platinum has been handling both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of their games. Games are developed on an internal Platinum-developed engine, and PS3 is always the lead platform. However, the specs remain the same between the two versions.

    Naught Dog's new ip, the last of us looks epic. This proves that UC3 wasn't maxed out.
