I have been promising a Tina Noyes video for over a year now. I have yet to find it; but, in the meantime, here is a collection of photos to commemorate her place as one of the 60's greats!

You are often known by the company you keep, and as you can tell from these photos, Tina was 'in high cotton' as far as competitive partners were concerned. We first saw her hoisted on the shoulders of Lauraunce Owen, after the Colorado Springs Nationals where she was Novice Champion. (Look closely in the background, and you can see the steel frame going up for the arena most of us are familiar with).

A student of Maribel Vincent Owen, she certainly had the pedigree for success in the sport. Unfortunately, she was probably the first skater to have her competitive career path severely altered by the introduction of televised coverage. Albertina skated in a traditional, athletic style, remeniscent of Carol Heiss, Sjoukje Dijkstra, Ina Bauer, Barbara Roles, Karen Magnussen and others. Some felt a balletic style enticed more viewers, and a young skater from California slipped in ahead of Tina. She also had to contend with the likes of upstarts Janet Lynn and Julie Lynn Holmes.

She did skate in two Olympics. One photo from the 64 Innsbruck games shows her with Peggy Fleming, and Christina Haigler. A second barrier pose is quite a "Mount Rushmore" of American ladies skating, Tina Noyes, Peggy Fleming, and Janet Lynn.

Tina landed a triple toe loop to make the 1964 team, and might have won a bronze medal in Grenoble had she been as successful with it there.

Tina stayed in another year, hoping to land a National title in 1969....but her triple toe loop failed her, and the torch was passed to a new generation. I conclude with a photo of Peggy and Tina (two old arch nemisis and competitive rivals) sharing a nose rub at Peggy's 30th anniversary party. Would that rivals today knew enough about sportsmanship to exhibit such behavior.

2nd at US Nationals in 1964, and 1966 - 68, 3rd in 1965 and 1969.

  • Petra Burka's first ladies triple (salchow) has been verified as 1962.......that much is settled!

  • I received a reply from a skating fan who insists she read in Tina Noyes Autobiography (now out of print), that she landed the triple in 1964......only a memory at this point, but we will make more confirmation efforts. Surely, someone out there of official status (judge or coach) remembers and can confirm???????

  • Babs reports she cannot remember the title.....she read it about 1978.....she checked the Colorado library system, and there is no record of it there........perhaps if you searched the Library of Congress....if it has an ISBN number, it should still be found there.......I will try myself later....best wishes

  • I will try to track it down for you. One girl just mentioned she had read it as a teenager.......best wishes

  • The skater (and the my coach) in question was Gail Newberry! Janet had never beaten her in Sectional (or won a Sectional) until the 1966 Junior National title (including the mentioned triple salchow). Janet claims in her book that she landed it. Tapes seem to show an under-rotation, but it may have been counted as successful by the judges...it certainly was by Janet!!

  • Someone has written to correct me on Petra Burka's triple salchow...it was at the 1965 Canadian Nationals, not 1963. Sooooo....if Tina landed a triple toe at US Nationals in 1964, that means SHE is the first lady to land a triple jump!!!!!! Historic news revealed here on YOUTUBE!!! This is turning into a PBS 'Mystery' that must be solved!!!!!

  • I strongly suspect that if Ms. Brennan knew of a first triple for Tina, she would have mentioned it in her book.....I will have to check the local library to re-read that!! An answer is out there!!

  • I am not getting the 'official' confirmation back I would have liked. SO far I know, Petra Burka of Canada was the first woman to do a triple (salchow) in 1963. Some say Gabby Seyfert landed a triple loop at 1967 Europeans. Right now, Janet Lynn landed the first American triple (toe) in 1969. Early attempts were under-rotated! (Not sure about the Junior one?? - havenen't check my P&L book yet!!) Unless someone definitavely vouches for the 1965 Noyes triple, it may be in error??

  • I hope to find something soon....or I will make a pilgrmage to Colorado Springs soon, and find something of interest!!! No answers yet from the eyewitnesses I queried!! Happy New Year.....

  • I'll check my peace and love copy too.... page 46 says she landed a 3sow as a junior, but i think it was cheated back then. I thought she was credited in 1969 with a clean 3toe, but I'm not for sure. I would love to see how Tina Noyes skated, I have never seen any footage of her :(
