This is country at it's best. The country lifes prety simple and this song shows it. Today these 'country' singers frekin glorify what it is to live in a small town or on a farm. Lived on a farm my whole life ain't ever had what the todays country sings bout
@jillrwargers yes and most of the farmland is owned already, or for sale at a high price, at least the good yield stuff....people leave town for better job and lifetime opportunities, and to get out of the "good old boy" system
@hmg789 oh and around my town anyway, farmers (which would be a lot of the population around a small town) make a pretty good amount of money! So economically, yeah you actually can make money in a small town! If you really want to stay and be a farmer that is. So people move due to the fact they want a different job instead of farming, not because of economy.
@hmg789 you have to remember he's talking about teenagers who aren't drinking age so drinking alcohol is technically considered 'bad'. And when the lyrics say 'they're going 90mph to the city limit sign' he's not talking about Bobby and Lucy anymore, he's talking about the people leaving town! And the song was released around 1990. But the song itself doesn't have to take place in the 90s. It's supposed to be around the 60s, I think.
@hmg789 just enjoy the song!!! Nobody wants to read comments about how this doesn't fit and that doesn't work!! No offense but it's annoying.... It's just a freaking song!! If you don't like it then just don't listen to it!
Hmmm I live near at least 2 dozen towns that fit this and at least 2 of those towns have 30,000+ people in them. They just never got over being small towns. Pity they don't write songs like this much any more... they are very descriptive. A lot of people grew up in this kind of place. Either you're one of the 20% who move away or you stay your whole life. With nothing to do. Could be describing the south side of Chicago as easily as Nowhere Kansas. Hasn't changed in 100 years.
@slownoman ya people leave town and never come back.......reason, economically......there is typically no future for anyone in these small towns, especially with their "no outsiders", good old boy system, which hinders advancement and thus forces anyone out who wants to make something of themselves, unless theyr related to the sheriff or judge....
@hmg789 YES EXACTLY!!!!!
