I realize this is a classic story and opera, etc. etc., and it wasn't intended this way, but I can't help dying at 2:45 and collapsing in laughter at the line "...or sometimes a useful servant..."
ROFL! Useful servant how, exactly?
Apart from that, and all potential aesthetic manners of persuasion, why would Liza go for psycho-Hermann instead of Yeletsky, who is not only rich, of respectable social standing, and is earnest and honest in: "...your friend and always your consoler"? Stupid woman.

Как он великолепно поёт и постановка прекрасная! Однако слышно его дыхание, мне всегда это портило впечатление от его исполнения; особенно в театре очень слышно - по крайней мере, было слышно тогда; говорят, он поборол эту проблему, но трудно поверить в это. А так - голос просто бесподобный, как у Бастианини...

I don´t understand Liza either. If a man, and especially as kindhearted, loving and passionate as Prince Yeletsky and as maddeningly beautiful, charming and aristocratic as Mr. Hvorostovsky, said these things to me, I would take him no matter the cost and do all in my power to keep him for the rest of my life.

Did I previously mention here how WONDERFUL this is??? How can I believe that Liza doesn't feel anything for a guy that says these romantic things with such a sex-appeal and such a voice!!!
Hvorotovsky ROCKS!!!!!!!!!! And this is for sure the BEST romantic aria EVER written for an opera.
