I am currently participating in Google Summer of Code 2010, for a Go-OO, and is working on a visual formula editor for OpenOffice Math.
This is a preview of the current status, caret movement and selection is working pretty good. Editing is underway, but not working yet!
Redrawing is a little slow and it flickers a bit, but I tried to move slowly allowing xvidcap to get more frames.
You can read more about my project and status here:

  • Absolutely... This feature won't prevent you from using the old text interface, which does have it's benefits in terms of speed, at least for some power users...

By the way, this patch is already included in LibreOffice 3.3, and will be an experimental (e.g. unstable) feature you can activate under settings...

  • Hey, i hope we'll still have an option of using old text-based formula editor after this one gets into default release, won't we?

  • Well, do it :) It looks much much better than the current version.
