2010-2011 UCI Patrick Cyclo-cross World Cup: Snow and ice can't stop Boom and Compton

The heavy snow showers of the last week turned the former F1 car racing circuit in Zolder, Belgium into a challenging cyclo-cross course for the UCI Patrick Cyclo-cross World Cup.

Dutch champion Lars Boom (Rabobank) bested World Cup leader Niels Albert (BKCP-Powerplus) in the difficult circumstances in the Elite Men category. Nevertheless Albert strengthened his World Cup lead over Sven Nys (Landbouwkrediet).

The win from Katherine Compton (USA) in the Women's category moves the US-champion ahead of former leader Sanne van Paassen (The Netherlands) in the lead of the World Cup.

The win from Boom in the Elite Men category came after an exciting duel with Albert. The duo quickly distanced the rest of the field. Early on Albert had the upper hand because Boom encountered repeated problems with his chain. The lead from Albert over Boom was never more than fifteen seconds and during the fifth lap the two 24 year-old riders were tackling the snow together. During the following lap Albert struggled with the deep snow while Boom powered away. Boom quickly gathered a gap of ten seconds and Albert was unable to close it back down. It allowed Boom to win the only World Cup round he's racing this season. More than a minute behind the two protagonists Belgian star Bart Wellens (Telenet-Fidea) claimed the remaining podium spot.

Belgian champion Nys finished only in fifth place. World Cup leader Albert strengthened his gap on Nys in the overall standings of the World Cup up to a comfortable 66 points.

In the Women's category Compton was riding on a league of her own. After only one lap she had a gap of half a minute on former World Cup leader Sanne van Paassen (The Netherlands). The latter was eventually caught back and left behind by World Champion Marianne Vos (Nederland Bloeit). In front Compton made several crashes on the slippery course but she eventually won the race with a gap of almost a minute on Vos. Van Paassen finished third half a minute later.

With only two World Cup rounds left Compton moves ten points ahead of Van Paassen in the World Cup standings. Dutch champion Daphny van den Brand (The Netherlands) finished fourth in Zolder and trails Compton by 50 points in the standings.

During the two morning races on Sunday the winning streaks from Belgians Vincent Baestaens and Laurens Sweeck were ended. Lars Förster (Switzerland) won the race in the Juniors Men category, while World Cup leader Sweeck finished in position four. Wietse Bosmans (Belgium) won in the Men Under 23 category by holding off Tijmen Eising (The Netherlands) and Mathieu Boulo (France). Baestaens remains in the overall lead of the World Cup, keeping only five points bonus on Bosmans.

The penultimate round of the UCI Patrick Cyclo-cross World Cup is held in Pont-Château in France with races in all four categories on 2011, January 16.
