@21bubby Go by her I should dislike Neil Gaimans MirrorMask or Michael Ende The Neverending Story. I should also dislike anything by C. S. Lewis to. Because even forbid it does not fit in with her idea of fantasy.
@21bubby Dose she know anything about the fact that magic and real world things can and do mix together all the time. Look at steampunk, look at the people that came after J. R. R. Tolkien that made worlds such as Dungeon and Dragons, Final Fantasy, World of Warcraft they are all part of High fantasy and can and do mix in things from the real world well still using magic. You also have Medieval fantasy, sword and sorce, Contemporary fantasy, and so on.
@21bubby To her genre and writing style I bet she is. When it comes to the world of fantasy and how it works she knows nothing about it. She can have what ever opinion she wants on something like Harry Potter. But until she understands the fantasy world and how it works she should not talk about it. Has she ever bothered to read anything by George R. R. Martin, Robert Jordan, has she even read or saw any work by Neil Gaiman? Has she read. Has she even read The Dark Tower by Stephen King?
I'm at chapter 1 and already I'm bored, there are some interesting things which happen but seriously, he descriptive bits are just too much! I just want to get on with the plot!
@Yobero I know what you mean. The history parts where way too much and I was often confused. But still I enjoyed the novel, mainly because I've dealt with childrens literature in the past and she's absolutely right about the authors and their own children. One wouldnt think that it's so destructive.
A.S. Byatt sounds like the Queen ;-) Acres of boredom... yes! I just finished reading The Children's Book. Engrossing although I have to admit I skipped huge parts of it, especially the 'history lessons' and after a while als the detailed descriptions of clothes, objects, pots and glaswork etc. Very repetitive and slows down the narrarative. Also I had trouble keeping all the characters straight in my head as their names are so similar. I actually had to make a list of them.
A.S. Byatt is hightly erudite and literate, but still down to earth and has a wonderfully self-deprecating humor. No wonder she's one of my new favorite authors!
