This Yaad Piya ki Aye thumri was one of the four thumris that Pandit Jagdish Prasad sang in AITIJJHYA concert on 19 June 2009 evening in Kolkata. In this rendering you will listen to a couplet [Sher] that was not presented in the famous 'Yaad Piya ki Aye' gramophone record. Jagdishjee said that he learnt this 'Sher' from his teacher legendary Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.

This is a privilege to share the performance of Pandit Jagdish Prasad, the living ace vocalist of Patiala Gharana. Jagdishjee had the rare privilege to learn with the music legend like Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. He also had the privilege to be a regular visitor of the daily musical sittings of the court of Raja Chakradhar Singh of Raigarh. The Raigarh royal court was full of the then music stars like, Ustad Ashiq Ali Khan, Ustad Kale Khan, Ustad Muhammad Khan, Ustad Inayet Khan, Pandit Shambhu Maharaj, Pandit Lachchhu Maharaj, Ustad Kader Baksh, Ustad Munir Khan, Ustad Tasadduk Hussein and many others. Jagdishjee had the opportunity to be close to these galaxy of outstanding musicians. His father Pandit Badri Prasad, who basically belonged to Aghor Mandi - Lahore, was his main trainer and used to sing in Punjab style. Jagdishjee faithfully learned with his father and started to sing impressively. This was the reason that Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan taught him so affectionately. With his Gurus' blessings Jagdishjee received showering love from millions of music lovers and regarded as the ace vocalist of the Patiala School of singing by the musicians.

You will also listen to Jagdishjee's son Samrat Pandit giving vocal support to his illustrious father. Samrat was discovered as a musical prodigy when he was 6-7 years old. He could make notation of any musical motif immediately after the actual execution of the main musician. The main vocalist sang and Samrat would immediately sing the same phrase in Sargam. Now, he has grown up and matured. Now he is giving wonderful vocal support to his father and also singing solo concerts.

Jagdishjee had two brilliant musicians to provide him musical support. Pt. Sohanlal Sharma is very widely acknowledged as the top harmonium player. Parimal Chakraborty is an outstanding tabla player who is equally at ease in tabla solo recitals and providing tabla support to any sensitive musician.

  • Samrat Pandit is also superb, particularly the flash of taan at 5:05

  • How is that, such a singer did NOT get the acclaim that is deserved! The younger guy in the back also has such fine and flexible voice worthy of Patiala-Kasur traditions.

  • Mindblowing mastery...look at the utter ease, the zen-like flow fit for the Gods! We are fortunate indeed that such masters still walk among us...Salutes and Thanks immensely for sharing this clip...
