Edouard Risler playing Chopin's A minor Mazurka, op 17/4.

This recording comes from 1917 and, unfortunately, is in very poor sound due to Pathe's recording process. The interpretation however is exceptional. Risler studied with Descombes, Diemer, Stavenhagen and d'Albert (several Liszt pupils).

  • Thanks so much for this rare treat.

  • Yes. That's because Chopin was a genius! it was jazz in 1840 or whenever it was written. Chopin seems to have written the twentieth century's music right here. And the start is the opening of "Maria" from "West Side Story".

  • Extravaganzas was the craze of Romanticism! Compare with Horowitz' version of the same piece.

  • late at night .I realized I was wrong. The first tempo change sounded so right.A revelation! Listen to music without score inhand & so much becomes it.Glorious recording.Risler had IT!

  • i kep coming back to this .the worst excesses of the time as insane as Pogorrelich in Rachman 2 concero.I have to be ambivalent .I'm glad there was a time where the performer could play the role of composer.fancy the take before serious narcoticsI wonder if Samsonrancois ever heard this.AMAZINGly wrongheaded! and tres amusante!

  • Beautifully played.

  • wow! amazing ! what a rare pianist... and the music doesnt sounds like chopin... its sounds like an old jazz pianist recording

  • Welcome, Madame! I wish I had a personal hotline to Ward Marston and to Zenph Records! (Nimbus used to do a good job of transfers, too...) This Risler disc cries out for a meticulous restoration. Yet bad sound and all, his playing still astonishes me. It is truly revolutionary playing. I can see why Cortot said: "Diemer taught me piano. Music was revealed to me by Eduard Risler." More Risler, please, AntonioDGO! Merci!

  • And thank YOU for forwarding, like it a lot!
