Punch a person from Easton and the blood that comes out will have been drunk by a mosquito from the Hockomock Swamp.

On September 3, 2003 I got up and drove down the street four miles to the Easton/Raynham on Route 138 and crawled my way for a mile through an endless thicket of high bush blueberry and sphagnum moss and clethra and red maple. The swamp was so dry that the hummocks of sphagnum were like pillows. And I thought about what Jack and Anne Marie Kent said to us little kooks at Wheaton Farm about the Wampanoags using sphagnum moss as diapers. At this late summer level of dryness, it made some sense. Sphagnum would be good diaper material.

I got to a nice deer stand on an island, then almost to the Easton Rod & Gun Club (God bless Joe Cardoza) and then turned back, chased by one quadrillion mosquitoes.

And whoever is driving an ATV in this part of the Hockomock out behind Howard Street and the Easton Rod & Gun Club. Please stop. Really. Get off your ass and walk like a real man. You are destroying the place. I saw three foot deep ruts in the swamp when I was there. It is sick, it is stupid, it is unnecessary, and it needs to stop.

Don't Knock the Hock.

  • i have wanted to go here ever since reading about it in "Weird Massachusetts" i live in Methuen, so it is quite a long drive for me. An HOUR!!!!!

  • pretty interesting place out there. Even in the daylight, it is "dark" out there. been out there during a full moon once or twice.

  • you do know bigfoot thunderbird and evil dogs live in that forest

  • I am always out there...and those kids have no respect, they pass you without slowing down and they ruin the forest....its so worth it when they hit those sink holes and lose there quads...by the way, there are surprises coming to those who ride and cut down 300 year old trees for nothing....because someone is always watching.

  • We will ride were ever when ever right over u and ur bushes
