I twice spent a few days at Omatiya while on Olifant mbt transporter convoys in 1988.We took new Olifants from School of Armour up to the border.Remember enjoying an ice cold Lion in the canteen, the whitish coloured sand and the telecommunication tents covered with creepers....such a great time.Sad day to see the unit disbanded long live 61 Mech in the hearts and minds of those who where associated with it or happened to stop over there i short while.

Was by 61 Meg in '91. Dit is in die dae na die Oorlog so ek kan nie saampraat nie. Ek wens egter ek kon ook daar gewees het tydens die stryd.

Knop in die keel is te groot vir woorde, my maat is op die muur. Lt. A.P.R. Carstens- 88-90 61 Mech.

Alles kom seker maar to 'n einde, of hoe?

I was based there 80 and 81 for Protea and Daisy, and served next to them in 88 for Hooper and Packer. Hated it then, but now I remember with fondness.... we will never forget...

I've got a lump in my throat and I'm fighting back tears. I served with 61 Mech in 88 and 89 and saw action in op Merlyn. Having served with 61 will be a source of pride with me until my dying day.

Yankeehatinactor is showing good insight - not getting trapped in the emotional trap everyone else get themselves into.
It was never a win-win at all. If nationalists won, sanctions & guerilla warfare went on, lost it - demise of law & order.
The next war is against poverty and anarchy. Let's all take up "arms" to fight for a beautiful country with a positive future for our children to come.
