On Friday, August 31 at 11:30am, New Orleans public housing residents led a national delegation in occupying and shutting down the Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO). Residents demanded a meeting with Department of Housing & Urban Development appointed "Recovery Advisor" Donald Babers, and called for HANO to honor residents' right to return and to reopen all public housing developments in New Orleans.
This event took place in the same week of the International Tribunal on Hurricanes Katrina & Rita. The Tribunal is a international people's court trying the United States government for crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing & genocide, racial discrimination, and the denial of the rights of displaced persons, including the right to return.
