The Mountain is bigger than Hodor. Hodor is about seven feet tall, the Moun tain is nearly 8. However, it's not just the size, it's the hairiness and the low intelligence. When John sees actual giants in the North, they're as hairy as the mammoths they ride, and they're supposed to be dumb as a rock (although they can talk in the Old Tongue).
