Although I'm sure there are people who disagree with me; one guy I know owns everything from c-stands to arri kits and he seems happy, although also in extreme in debt.

Really, the only things you'd be justified in buying is stuff that you would need on every shoot; a camera, and its equipment (lenses/tripod/cases) and audio stuff
Outside of that, only buy stuff outside of that if you plan on becoming a specialist in the field; like only buy a Steadicam if you plan to make money as a Steadicam operator. (Which is a nice way to get money)
