Krakow hejnal - the traditional interrupted tune - is played from higher of St Mary's church towers four times in each hour (so that it was heard in all four directions of the world).

LEGENDARY ORIGIN:
According to the legend the hejnal played by trumpeter used to warn te citizens of Krakow about the upcoming danger - such as fire or invasion of aggressor. During one of the Tatar invasions, while playing the hejnal, the trumpeter died of an arrow that pierced hiw throat. He never managed to finish the melody - that is why nowadays the hejnal ends abruptly before being completed.
