One of the most obvious solutions to bad breath is to gargle regularly with mouthwash. This works well in most cases, particularly when the mouthwash is effective in killing oral bacteria. But there are also some kinds of mouthwash that do the exact opposite instead of making your breath fresh, they contribute to the buildup of foul odor in your mouth.

This can be explained by the presence of alcohol in the mouthwash. Alcohol can be effective in killing oral bacteria but it also dehydrates the inside of your mouth by preventing the adequate flow of saliva. For this reason, you have to pay attention when you buy your next mouthwash. Check that there is no alcohol listed among its ingredients.

Water is also an essential tool in the prevention of bad breath. Besides using mouthwash, drinking plenty of fresh water throughout the day will also rid you of bad breath. Regular water consumption will ensure that your digestive tract is cleaned of trapped food particles, as well as keep it free of odor-causing bacteria. Another way of using water is by rinsing your mouth after meals. This is particularly useful if you are eating out and do not have a toothbrush with you. Simply swirl the water in your mouth while drinking your last glass after the meal. However, this may not be considered acceptable in some social circles. In such circumstances, it is a good idea to do this very discreetly, or better yet, in the privacy of the restroom.

Using mouthwash is good per se but it will be pointless unless you combine it with other healthy dental practices. The most basic of these are brushing and flossing regularly. Ideally, you should brush after every meal but since this is not practical for many people, brushing once in the morning and once before bedtime is considered sufficient. You must pay attention not only to your teeth but to your tongue and gums as well. One minute is the ideal time you should spend brushing according to most dentists. Once you are done brushing, you must rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and your favorite mouthwash.

Nevertheless, try to brush your teeth after every meal if at all possible. If you work during the day, bring your toothbrush and toothpaste with you if you can. You should also make sure to floss everyday. Discard your old toothbrush after using it for 3 months. If you keep using it for a longer period, bacteria will eventually build up and trigger the onset of bad breath.

Choosing the right toothbrush, dental floss or mouthwash can be difficult, considering the hundreds of brands currently available today. You can ask your dentist for a recommendation the next time you go for a dental checkup. The ideal frequency of these checkups should be at least once every 6 months. An annual checkup is actually sufficient if you do not have any dental problems. However, if you notice irregularities in your mouth such as pain and swelling in the gums, you must schedule and appointment right away.

Another thing that you should consult with your dentist is the type of toothpaste you should use. Toothpastes today come in all brands, colors and flavors, but the important thing you should consider is their active ingredient. Fluoride is essential in maintaining excellent dental health and fresh breath. Peroxide and baking soda are also very effective in keeping your teeth clean. The cleaner your teeth are, the fresher your breath can be. There are several teeth whitening products that can be used as well. These usually have potent ingredients that will serve you well in whitening your teeth and preventing bad breath.

Bad breath is obviously a very serious problem that can affect you both physically and socially. However, this is not the most severe problem you are facing. Bad breath usually stems from a more serious oral infection due to negligence in dental care. For this reason alone, you must take extra care in keeping your mouth and teeth healthy at all times. If you are able to maintain good dental health, the risk of getting cavities, accumulating plaque and sustaining gum disorders will be greatly reduced. Furthermore, you can be assured that with a healthy mouth and teeth, you will be safe from getting bad breath.
