This slideshow walks you down both sides of the street from the corner of St. Laurent and Ste. Catherine during one afternoon in November, 1965. It uses photos taken from a catalogue of an exhibit held at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 1966 called "Montréal, plus ou moins?/ plus or minus?" Melvin Charney organized the exhibit and took the photos. Louis Rastelli assembled them into this silent slideshow and added comments.
The entire west side of the street (from the Woolworth's building to the Monument Nationale) is set to be demolished to make way for a new Hydro-Québec office complex, putting an end to 200 years of that block being active at night.

Hello, I have just found your video showing the woolworts building. My Grandfather Gilbert Sweet had on his CV 1937-39 - designed Montreal Woolworths building under Archibald and Isley. has anyone any info about this?

merci, magnifique! my father used to go to the show in the 30's on the main. for a quarter he got a hot dog, 3 movies, and a floor show. he seen Danny Kaye there. he said the whole place roared with laughter, his act was that funny. in those days, Montreal was an important stop on the circuit. as for me i can remember many steamed hot dogs at the Montreal Pool Room. how we took it all for granted...thanks for the memories, arcmtl.
