The majority of dermatologists (except for junior skin specialists) won't accept patients with moles. Most limit their practices to cosmetic surgery which is more profitable and less gross to deal with.

Self check is ok, but if you have moles, the only way of really preventing a melanoma from becoming a nightmare, is by going to a GOOD DERMATOLOGIST and make him check and track your moles thru time.

Actually, Bob Marley, the famous african american regae singer had melanoma. Everyone should worry about it and examine their skin.
