Don Burgess should have won the Academy Award this year for this single shot alone. Hard to believe that he wasn't even nominated. This is right up there with Touch of Evil's opening sequence.

They did use CGI.
Forrest Gump uses a variety of visual effects, but tries to carefully blend them so that you don't notice.
