The Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs held a hearing entitled "Pakistani Elections: Will They Be Free and Fair or Fundamentally Flawed?" The history of Pakistani democracy and the U.S. relations to Pakistan were talked about. Senator Daschle talked the political developments in Pakistan that have affected the viability of parliamentary elections. Mr. Garrett talked about the methods used by the International Republican Institute (IRI) to encourage the growth of pro-democracy groups in Pakistan. He focused on the use of polling by the IRI in Pakistan. Mr. Schneider said that the political conditions in Pakistan did not permit a fair and free election.
