The melody he plays isn't heard much in North Carolina & the Virginias but is the standard version of Cumberland Gap in the state of Tennessee. I've only heard these particular lyrics sung by Bascom.
Saw this footage in a documentary. The whole program is great!

I enjoyed this video. This man was my great grandfather. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to meet him but we did live at the same time and he was my longest living relative at 92.

tommy jarrell and some others around galax and mt airy sang the same song as "tumblin gap," which was a place well known in the mountains there...people adapted tunes relate to local places and oft many of the lyrics either floated or were invented/written their locally...
