actually there's a small story behind it . . lakshmi's husband, lord vishnu . . gave his vaijayanti mala to bhrugu rishi as a gift when he went to vaikuntam..while returning rishi thought what a rishi will do of this and so gave it to indra,Indra had lot of such malas and so made his elephant wear that1..mahalakshmi took it as an insult to her husband and cursed indra he bacame extremely poor..so indra composed this octet..lakshmi forgave him then and he regained his wealth

@Lauraorientale3110 - My Friend, I honestly do not know the answer to your question. It has been passed down to us that INDRA himself composed this sloka in praise of Lakshmi. However, I can attest that chanting the Lakshmi mantra, and Lakshmi Ashtakam and the Lakshmi Gayatri Mantra will bring the blessings of prosperity as needed.
