This is a short demo video of the Digital Instrument Panel for the 2008-2009 Cornell University SAE Baja Racing vehicle. The display is a transflective monochrome LCD sized 320x240 pixels from Newhaven Display. The microcontroller running the whole thing is a Rabbit Semiconductor RCM4120.
is the text on the bottom input from the laptop?

It can be. The whole idea of the text area was to be able to communicate with the driver from the base station. Or it can be configured for whatever you want it to do (e.g. "Low Fuel" when fuel gets to 10%).

do you think that it's going to be more effective than a race radio system. I had a "similar" idea, but even in my wildest dreams did it look as cool as yours. Good Luck,
See you in Alabama.

Short answer: No.
A radio would provide much more effective communication between driver and his/her crew. However, the dash was never intended to perform the function of such a system. The text area was basically a "bonus" to the instrument panel. The primary objective has always been to provide quantified feedback to the driver that can help improve performance. The digital format just adds style.
