Roman Gladiators Do Battle At Dickinson College.
David Krug of Cresson, Pa., a junior at Dickinson College, donned authentic gladiator uniform, complete with armor and weapons, to engage in a choreographed theatrical battle against senior Jason Rosenstock on Saturday, April 15, at Dickinson College in Carlisle.
Krug and Rosenstock represented the two most important types of Roman gladiators: the retiarius and the myrmillo. The retiarius, or net fighters, carried a signature net and trident, while the myrmillo carried a sword and could be recognized by the fish icon on their helmets. These two types of gladiators were often matched together in battle during the Roman Empire.
The costumes were researched by Christopher Francese, assistant professor of classical studies at Dickinson, and designed by professional prop designer Kevin McCombs and seamstress Sandra Hutton, both of Carlisle. The choreography was created by Rosenstock.
The event was part of the meeting of Eta Sigma Phi, the national collegiate honor society for classical studies, which took place April 14-15 at Dickinson. Approximately 100 students of classical culture attended the weekend festivities.
A private, national liberal arts college of 2,000 students, Dickinson is located in south central Pennsylvania and is known for its innovative curriculum and international education programs. In September, 1783, the school became the first college chartered in the new nation.
