This is what 2 days and little sleep produced. I bought a few of these 72*24 dot RGB LED display/driver boards on ebay.

They came with all the drivers, LEDs, and a Cyclone FPGA built in. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) they contained some unknown proprietary FPGA fusemap.... sooo, I soldered a JTAG header on the board and plugged in my Byteblaster cable and had a go at making my own FPGA code to run it!

This is the result of that.

The display is showing various palettes and a "plasma" pattern as found on oldskool demos. I included an oldskool demo soundtrack for this, from the demo "Unreal".

Tech specs:

*1728 RGB LEDs
* 72*24 dot array
* 24 bit RGB full colour
* Intenally it is 10 bit PWM to the LEDs themselves
* Gamma correction calculations
* Brightness correction calculations

  • hello, what is the name of the software. How got you this programm? thanks g

  • it was designed using Quartus 2, an FPGA developement environment made by Altera. I designed and made the coding required to drive the LEDs and the patterns made thereon.

  • thanks, sounds good. is it possible to order the software with a working led-matrix at you?

  • The matrixes were surplus and the seller doesn't have any more of the 72*24 size left.

  • Are those square LEDs or the typical rounded ones?

  • they are small surface mount LEDs. square, 6 flat pads, and a round area where the 3 dice are and a clear epoxy filler.

  • I wanna build an RGB LED display too. But in all the online shops i've been to, the RGB LEDs seem extremely expensive. Perhaps i should try building an led fan instead, they're also pretty cool, but it would be a lot more of a hazzle to build a driver for them.

  • hello, do you think i could make something like this with an ATmega328 controlling a bunch of tlc5940s? how about controlling the 5940s using a laptop as the spi master?

    thank you

  • OMG THIS IS AMAZING!

  • [iminent led]LED Sign!!![/led]

  • [iminent rb=anim]LED display~LED video wall!!![/rb]

  • any idea where to get some of these boards now?

  • do u think these effects will work the same with a 24x16 display

  • I know this is 2 years old. Any chance you can share your code for the plasma pattern? I know a lot of it is proprietary to the specific FPGA, but the algorithm would help me with a similar project. THANKS!

  • nice;) but the musik o.O
