@schs1977: I'm atheist and I was in this choir. This choir is non-denominational and although most people in this choir were very religious, we were all there mostly to have fun and sing our hearts out.

The bible you people blindly follow is nothing more then a few good teachings and metaphorical stories. It was written by false visionaries whose goal was to gain followers. Jesus more then likely existed but in a way more less exaggerated form. (still possible he never existed) The point I'm trying to get at is don't follow the bible as its "magical" and that praising some omnipresent deity. If there is some form of afterlife its way beyond anything anyone in the bronze age saw. or current.

I'm sure there was little no study about what role this song plays in the grand scheme of music. Me being both a classical cellist as well as a minister of music I have to frown. But thats ok because the ensembles at my church "sangs em under the benches" with gospel, but i've trained them to drop jaws with a few choral numbers. Pitty, ya'll could have learned something relavant.

I can understand the hollering..oh to be a fly on the wall in the rehearsal room.."no this is our fun piece..we won't take it too seriously but we're going to sing it just as we would The Messiah..who wants to do a dramatization of the beginning part" i'm offended and entertained because they are naive and didn't and probably still don't know any better.

I find in amazing one of the most liberal colleges in American would allow a "gospel choir"!

I'm glad that the gospel choir was continued even after Dr. Sylvester Henderson's departure but I have to say that the vocal discipline and band was so much better during his time.
