As LCD and plasma vie for popularity and picture quality bragging rights, one perceived weakness of the LCD camp has provided a reason for TV makers to charge more for step-up models: image blurring. Higher refresh rates like 120Hz and now 240Hz aim to clean up blurring with newfangled technology, and Toshiba's ZV650U series is one of the least-expensive 240Hz sets available. Mind you, in most normal program material we find it nearly impossible to appreciate the antiblurring effect of higher refresh rates, but some people are really bummed by blurring, and for them the new LCDs--or perhaps the nearly blur-free images produced by plasmas--hold appeal. Unfortunately for this particular Toshiba, high-tech-sounding processing can't overcome lighter black levels and a few other picture-quality foibles. On the other hand, for those dead set on LCD who don't mind paying a bit extra for 240Hz, the relatively low price of the Toshiba ZV650U series makes it worth considering.

Series note: We performed a hands-on evaluation of the 47-inch Toshiba 47ZV650U but this review also applies to the 42-inch Toshiba 42ZV650U and the 55-inch Toshiba 55ZV650U. All three sizes share identical features and specifications.

Design
Toshiba deserves credit for bucking the trend of flat-panel TV frames composed entirely of glossy black. Instead, the frame around the screen of the ZV650U series is edged in silver metal, which borders a silver background that fades tastefully to black. If you look closely you'll see that the black fade is suspended above the silver background on a transparent sheet, and the silver is composed of tiny squares that curve from the extreme edge of the panel inward. It's a subtly complex design that results in an attractive, unusual look that doesn't detract one whit from the picture. The company tops, er, bottoms the package with a matching swivel stand.

  • @akuma4u No, i figured it out, if you use the pc input on the monitor it will give you the 1280 by blah blah blah, i bought a cable DVI TO HDMI and i got 1920 by1080 dvi, it look beautyful. of course neede a few adjustment.

my pc have a digital graphic card so the dvi to hdmi worked great!. ohh by the way i'am such an idiot iafter buying the dvi to hdmi cable, and installed it, i found out later that my grafhic card has hdmi output, so didn't needed the wire, that's for rushing.

  • @MEGABOINK65 hey, i was about to get this to use as a PC monitor too but now am thinking twice as u said the highest resolution is 1280x 1024, i get that with my 22 inch LG that cost 120 bucks.. are u sure thats all this tv can give???

  • I just bought this tv. it is excellent, the picture is great! not sure why anyone would buy this to use it as a monitor anyway. not really what it was designed for. but as a tv it is awesome, and the price can not be beat. I paid 899 at costco. I have a small place, but the tv fits in well because of its slim design. the swivel stand is hand too. if you want a great tv for not a lot of money this may be the one for you. with the blu ray hooked up with the hd, I get an amazing pic

  • This tv is Awsome!!! Iv had it now for a month. Picked up the 47inch for 900 bucks tax free the picture quality is so clear and bright! it's much better then tv's twice as much! If your thinking of getting one do it! You will be very very happy!

  • Dam i just bought one today, and of course it sounds great but since i'am using it as pc a monitor 1280 by 1024 wont cut it for me, since i'am running a 37 inch westinghouse with dvi input giving me 1920 by 1080. IS GOING BACK!! DAM!

  • It not really a TRUE 240 HZ, toshiba lists it as "effective 240hz" but it is actually a 120hz. Before doing a video review perhaps you should read the manual. Thats why its cheaper than other 240hz tv's.

  • its awesome i own 1 but mines is 55 inches it also has a screen protector! best tv ive ever had
