I agree that in many ways, Keynote is better than PowerPoint. Key note definitely has better, more dramatic animations (especially slide transitions) and, to my knowledge, PowerPoint still can't animate graphs (the user has to literally break them apart and rebuild them).
However, keep in mind that PowerPoint 1.0 (and all of office before 5.0) was made exclusively for the Mac. Yes, you read that right.
I do the picture fade out/fade in within a single slide all the time in PPT.
Windows's market dominance was possible as Windows was shipped in all IBM computers in 1980s whereas Apple's Mac OS was only shipped in Apple's own computers only due to Steve Jobs' belief in deep integration of hardware and software. Therefore, Windows was the only OS that people could use and afford, so it became the most popular OS not because it was better than Mac OS but because people were used to it. The same goes for Powerpoint and Keynote.
