My neighbours Huberta and Matthias Bettex spent four years reclaiming this abandoned structure in the Rummelsburger Bucht neighbourhood in the Lichtenberg district of Berlin. The film shows the process of renovation, based mostly on the Bettex's photos. I made the film with the program 'PhototoMovie'. http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
The building was designed in the 1870's by famed Berlin architect Herman Blankenstein and was part of a complex of much larger buildings that saw use variously as a workhouse, 're-education centre' and prison. This smaller structure, known as 'Das Andere Haus VIII' (the other house #8) was also used as a hospital for prisoners. It was abandoned after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 although it is said that Erich Honecker spent one night here before fleeing to Moscow after the GDR dissolved.
As well as providing three households, Das Andere Haus also contains a small five room hotel run by Huberta. http://www.dasanderehaus8.de/
