Medical radiography could be improved by using geometric enlargement. With a truly sensitive receptor, a microfocus source can be used with the subject placed in the middle of the focus-receptor distance. This reduces the effective receptor pixel size to one half it's actual. You could completely fill a 14X17" receptor with one breast using a microfocus tube. The old rotating anode tubes need to be scrapped. These are the resolution limiting devices. Geometric magnification can't use them.
Digital detectors do provide significantly lower resolution than film, but the resolution is often limited by the focal spot size in the x-ray tube anyway. However, it is the reason why digital hasn't yet taken off for breast screening (at least in the UK) because it can't pick up very small micro-calcifications.
Digital is slightly faster than computed radiography (CR), and much faster to process than film, although this doesn't necessary translate into faster throughput.
Digital X-ray has much better resolution, much larger gray scale, far better sharpness and contrast than film. The digital image can be processed easily on a PC. It is not slow at all when compared to film processing. The best feature however is the much lower radiation dose required to get a good image i.e. a patient at risk can go to more screenings than with film. I would not compare the two technologies, one is in the past and the other one is the future.
digital x-ray is lower spatial resolution than old fashion x-ray film. Also I have used the equipment in the news clip, it is not faster and it consistently gives technical difficulties.
This video was posted in 2008... give em' a little break. It would be nice to see an updated version though.
