@englandmadethewest oh please, there are plenty of good remakes like the office, but sadly in the case of this movies remake, they just said, hey you know what, lets just "hey you know what, lets just make some shitty unfunny movie call it a comedy and find some really famous movie title to slap on it! that'll make us a shit ton of money! because by the time they get 10minutes into it and wish they never bought it, it'll be to fucking late!"

I should also have mentioned the Boulting Brothers Comedies as equally matchless examples of the form.

I suppose that it's not at all amazing that Hollywood can churn out epic sci-fi and fantasy blockbusters, yet still somehow manage to fall flat, when it comes to intricate, dialogue- and character-driven pieces. I'd guess that Hollywood is simply casting about for scripts, and not bothering to mount serious attempts.

Can we ever hope to again see the likes of Guinness, Greenwood, Carmichael, Price, Sellers, Lom, Griffith, Holloway, Parker, and Sim? Very unlikely!

Generally speaking, I'm all for giving remakes a fair chance. However--presuming to re-adapt a classic Ealing Comedy (or Astaire/Rogers, or the Marx Brothers, etc.) is just asking for it--in the neck.

The Formula isn't that complicated. Plot: Underdog(s)/Everyman vs. Establishment/System. Dramatis Personae: Filled with easily-recognised, culturally relevant types. Indoor sets: Rather stagey. Outdoor shots: Breathtaking vistas, great photography. Direction: Unobtrusive.
