  • There was a time when the very idea of remaking such a flawless film would have been regarded as an act of war.

Everyone involved with that american abortion should be chopped up and used to fertilise the flowers on Terry-Thomas' grave.

  • Splendid.

  • @EnormousHuntBall That same message to go to bollywood...whoever was involved in that Indian abortion from 1975 should be chopped up and used to fertilize the flowers on both the graves of Terry Thomas and Ian Carmichael.

  • @englandmadethewest forget the US, Bollywood did a remake of this movie in 1975 without acknowledging it!!!

  • @englandmadethewest oh please, there are plenty of good remakes like the office, but sadly in the case of this movies remake, they just said, hey you know what, lets just "hey you know what, lets just make some shitty unfunny movie call it a comedy and find some really famous movie title to slap on it! that'll make us a shit ton of money! because by the time they get 10minutes into it and wish they never bought it, it'll be to fucking late!"

  • The Americans think they can cut it like the English do with wit. No chance ! Why do they do trashy copies ? Why ? We may be skint, but we are class.

  • It makes me proud to be British. We are/were even good at laughing at ourseves.lol

  • Hard Cheese!

  • Today that car would rule any new car when it comes to value

I should also have mentioned the Boulting Brothers Comedies as equally matchless examples of the form.

Note that, for the Swift-Mobile's deliciously throaty purr, the sound-men borrowed the sound of the laboratory equipment from The Man in the White Suit.

  • I suppose that it's not at all amazing that Hollywood can churn out epic sci-fi and fantasy blockbusters, yet still somehow manage to fall flat, when it comes to intricate, dialogue- and character-driven pieces. I'd guess that Hollywood is simply casting about for scripts, and not bothering to mount serious attempts.

Can we ever hope to again see the likes of Guinness, Greenwood, Carmichael, Price, Sellers, Lom, Griffith, Holloway, Parker, and Sim? Very unlikely!

  • Generally speaking, I'm all for giving remakes a fair chance. However--presuming to re-adapt a classic Ealing Comedy (or Astaire/Rogers, or the Marx Brothers, etc.) is just asking for it--in the neck.

The Formula isn't that complicated. Plot: Underdog(s)/Everyman vs. Establishment/System. Dramatis Personae: Filled with easily-recognised, culturally relevant types. Indoor sets: Rather stagey. Outdoor shots: Breathtaking vistas, great photography. Direction: Unobtrusive.
