Awesome, thriving, touring band caught live in Philadelphia at a club called The East Side Club which used to be be below a hair salon at 1229 Chestnut St.
The Minutemen were a band with a naturally developed sense of integrity and character who traveled all across the country in their van playing shows such as this with unabashed intensity and great spirit. Take for instance their stripped down cover of Van Halen's classic, "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love". This was before it became such an easy joke for a band to poise "ironic" by mocking a tune out of their realm to "mess with people's minds". They regularly covered tunes by Creedence, The Who, Blue Oyster Cult, to name a few, as a badge of pride. Many punk acts of this era wouldn't be caught dead giving the honest nod to their heroes as they did. For those who know how sad it was when their life was trimmed by the loss of their guitarist D. Boon in 1985 we can console ourselves with the various memories and with footage like this. If you're not already familiar with The Minutemen ~ then you should have one helluva a great time catching up with their vital recorded output.
Songs are... 1. Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love 2. This Road 3. Polarity 4. Fanatics 5. Joe McCarthy's Ghost 6. Plight 7. The Process 8. Paranoid Chant (short)
Enjoy!
So many great shows happened at The East Side Club between other venues such as the Elks Center at 16th & Fitzwater and Love Hall on Broad near South St. ~ all in days before big business decided to have a chew and spit back something a bit more monetarily palatable. Funny (sad) thing was that you might go a few months without any decent shows and then you might have 3 or 4 in the same weekend.
What guitar is that D. is playing?
