UNC epidemiologist Steve Meshnick uses new molecular and demographic methods to track and map tropical diseases such as malaria and African sleeping sickness in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He will be using blood spots from a recently completed demographic health survey in the DRC. This information will help guide efforts to control diseases and also help in evaluating the effectiveness of treatment. Dr. Meshnick is partnering with Marco International, the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium and the Kinsasha School of Public Health in the DRC.
