President Richard Nixon and General Alexander Haig discuss the New York Times story, which first reprinted portions of the Pentagon Papers. Nixon finds out for the first time that the papers had been top-secret documents leaked from the Pentagon. The conversation cuts off mid-way in the original recording.

  • 64wulf, this tape was released by the National Archives, so no, it is not by any means fake. Thus far, a couple thousand hours of Nixon's tapes have been released. Check my channel for over a hundred more Nixon tapes conversations.

  • The damned study wasn't even Nixons thing in the first place, and he took the heat for it. People still didn't want to believe that JFK was anything but an angel.

  • I'd just start at the top and fire some people...

  • Where is the rest of this conversation?

  • @thecuddlemoose Its called integrity, that's how

  • @RainbowManification

I'd rather have those who leaked classified information and gave direct aid and comfort to the enemy pay for their crimes. We don't get to just decide on our own what laws to adhere to and which ones we won't.

  • he he mcnamara was a naughty little scamp

  • @thecuddlemoose So you rather would of been lied to and not known it by your own government?

  • This is facsinating hearing these morally reprehensible people running the country talking about American soldiers dying as if they were sticks in a storm. They are so cold about it. Nixon felt a compulsion to tape everything, which shows an obsessive nature--but allows us to peek in on all this craziness.

  • This particular tape doesn't reveal how evil and paranoid this asshole really was. Those of us who saw his arrogance firsthand in that era can understand. Except for his handling of Mao and China, one of the worst Presidents in US history but pales in comparison to George Bush! The absolute worst!

  • @TheJoester1992 This is the first he's hearing of it. Over the next couple of days, more details about the report came to the attention of the press, and the rollercoaster ride began.
