Robin Rice continues her discussion on "So You Want To Write A Book" with an updated version of her take on Al Zuckerman's first of five tips from his book "Writing The Blockbuster Novel." Learn how creating high stakes for your characters and plot push you to the head of the class!

THE MAYDEN CHRONICLES is a magical novel being written as a blog in real time (about a chapter every ten days) with video posts to enhance the story as well as to reveal the actual writing process. We have prizes for those who comment, including a grand prize $3,800 diamond studded watch form Baume & Mercier.

We feature young adult writers and posts on creating excellence in any field. We especially love to incorporate the comments from our readers into edits and next chapters.

  • Zuckerman is good. I also recommend James Frey, "How to Write a Damn Good Novel". One of the most useful books on writing I ever found was Orson Scott Card's, "Character and Viewpoint".

  • Thanks so much... I love Character and Viewpoint too!

  • You bet! More coming soon... Chapter eight of Mayden is now up, for those reading along with the tips...

  • I have an Idea for writing. Some of you may have heard "Don't let your imagination go wild, have a beginning, middle, and an end before you write your story or novel, WELL NO! You let your imagination go wild and free. Then the ideas will be more clear in or head. Then it will be easier and easier to re-write and re-write yours story (and faster to). So to sum it up. let your imagination run free then work with the ideas, then re-write.

  • can you tell me how to judge if a book is any good by reviews on line. at the present i go for authors signed to a major publishing house and only read reviews from well known newspapers and magazines, but nowadays anyone can knock up little newsletter magazine , get afriend or 2 to write a review and then put that up as a good review. i buy books from shops where i can have a quick read b4 buyin, is there a way to do this on line so i dont get tricked into buyin some self published tat?

  • I'm kind of afraid of typing mine up, I've read MANY people's books and they're great...do I need college training for all that? I just need to know some things like how can I start good, as it's a fantasy novel about an ugly jester who becomes a hero, and falls in love with the brave, independent princess who thinks he's awesome.

Anything quick you can say for me?

  • Thanks, you've given me help... really

I have a question i hope you could help me with =)

I'm writing a book myself, i'm only at the first chapter, though i got i layout of what i want and what schould happen in what chaper and what the characters should be like. But everytime i continue writing i feel like i'm focussing more on the readers than what i want to write. Now for my question ^^ could you tell me the balance between these 2? =) (ps. sorry for my english im dutch)

  • love your advice god bless L.O.V.E and im writing a novel but its more of a book cuz its shorter then 180 pages but im only 13, can u give me publishing advice cus of my old age

  • Thank you :) I simply call it "Divine Dictation." The story has come from somewhere else and I am simply transcribing it. I saw the whole story as a movie in my head one afternoon when my mind was clear and I was feeling relaxed. I've never written a thing in my life, so I know this powerful imagery has been given to me for a reason. Thanks for your kind words.

  • Yes, it is by Al Zuckerman, Writing The Blockbuster Novel, get it at Amazon...
